Top 5 Things to do Around Crantock after your lesson

If you have opted for some fantastic surf, SUP or bodyboard lessons with Big Green Surf School, then you will have some fun packed days ahead! However, if you have a bit of time and want to explore the stunning local area a bit more, then you have plenty of options. Crantock is blessed with some of the county’s most beautiful natural landscapes, exciting attractions and fascinating history. #1 Explore on foot

Whether you are based in Crantock or nearby, you will be spoilt for choice for walking routes with a view. Along the coast from Crantock to the west is Holywell Beach with its panoramic views and the striking Carter’s Rocks just offshore.

It is a beautiful walk from Crantock to Holywell passing through Porth Joke cove (locally known as 'Polly Joke') and, in around June, you will find an abundance of wildflowers including poppies and corn marigolds along the way. Don't forget to keep an eye on the water too, you may just be lucky enough to spot some of the local seal population and even dolphins.

Head in the opposite direction from Crantock and you can explore the expanses of the renowned Fistral Beach and further along to the stunning views of the South West Coastal path.

#2 Hop on a bike

If you don’t fancy walking, then hire a bike and head off into the countryside on one of the many cycling trails. The Cornish Way trail makes its way through Newquay and all the way to Land’s End,

if you are looking for a challenge away from the waves!

Another option is to cycle to Padstow and take the Camel Trail to Bodmin. This route is a former train-line, making it completely flat and is a peaceful way to discover the gorgeous Cornish countryside without having to fight with the traffic! There is also a lovely route from Crantock to the picturesque Trerice Manor (see no. 5) that should not be missed.

#3 Enjoy a local pint or a cream tea in Crantock

Crantock is a pretty coastal village with many fantastic independent cafes, restaurants and pubs for you to try during your stay. If you are looking for a cream tea, then why not make your way towards the centre of the village and enjoy the beautiful Hevlas Tea rooms, or the Cosy Nook Café, that more than lives up to its name. Here you can enjoy a scone with cream and jam the traditional Cornish way, make sure not to mix them up! They also serve some great breakfasts to set you up for a day on the waves. Another great spot is C-Bay Café with its wonderful views over the coast. Take a pew overlooking the sea and savour some fresh fish and seafood with a nice drink. For a good pint and some traditional pub grub, make your way to the quaint Old Albion Inn or the Bowgie Inn for a pint with a sea view.

#4 Discover coasteering

If you are looking for an exhilarating adventure, then you have to try coasteering during your stay in Crantock. For the unfamiliar, coasteering is a combination of cliff diving, rock climbing and general

exploration of the rocky coastline. The coast around Crantock and Newquay offers the ideal terrain for coasteering with amazing cliffs of varying heights, great for any ability, whirlpools, sea caves, smugglers paths and more. Don’t worry if you have never tried it before as coasteering is suitable for beginners and you don’t need any equipment either as most companies will provide it for you. It is essential to do this activity with a trained professional as they know the best spots and will keep you safe! #5 Explore Trerice Manor

Nestled in wonderful verdant countryside, Trerice is a quaint Elizabethan manor house owned by the National Trust. The property as it is today was completed by John Arundell V in 1572 but for long periods remained unoccupied. This blessing in disguise has left many fascinating Elizabethan features intact that would otherwise have been removed with changing fashions. Visitors today can be transported back in time as they wander through the tranquil house and gardens. Make sure to try your hand at a spot of Kayling or Slapcock on the garden bowling green!
